Other Mother VS Aggie Prenderghast (Coraline VS ParaNorman) Blog

Mother-Daughter Bonding.

"If you back down from a fear, the ghost of that fear never goes away."
-Hugh Jackman

The Other Mother, the twisted Beldam of the Other World.

Agatha Prenderghast, the tormented child of Blithe Hollow.

When a child is lonely, the desire they have to talk to someone is unfathomable. Stories are manifested in the harsh darkness of the night, and these tales manifest into something greater. Something stronger. Something, awful. Something... Horrifying. Can these terrors be manipulated into torture? Or will the terrors fight back in a flaming blaze of melancholy? Time to find out.

Before We Begin...
This is relatively cut-and-dry matchup, and the main connections between these two build off of the Laika versions of these characters. More specifically, the Laika version of the Other Mother. As Aggie was created by Laika themselves. Therefore, to keep this matchup's connections in-line, and also to make it as fair as possible, we're just looking at every Laika endorsed piece of media that's connected to these characters. Just for clarity, here's a list of the media used/not used.

Background

The Other Mother

The Pink Palace Apartments is an old, historic building nearly hundreds of years old. It's relatively unknown how she stumbled upon this rickety, yet lovable piece of architecture, but the Other Mother found herself inhabiting a pocket dimension of her control. She'd spend decades molding it to her liking, until she realized the catch. To stay alive and keep herself functioning, she needed to consume the liking of human souls. Adults see through her blasphemy and know when to get the hell out of there, but children were much more easily manipulatable. Via the button eyes of dolls that looked just like her newly-attained young target, the Other Mother, also known as the Beldam amongst her victims, spied on any child that set their sights on the Pink Palace. She'd collect information on their every problem to make sure that they'd fall right into her trap, slowly leading them to another world. A better world. One where everything is centered around you, your interests, and what you love. The things you hate are picked and prodded at until they're rebuilt in a way you can appreciate. A perfect world filled with perfect things is surely a sight to behold, so why not stay here? A sentiment shared with her meals, this is just one part of her game. Throughout the years the Other Mother managed to trap three kids' souls within her grasp, and got them to sew the buttons into their eyes, stealing their souls completely. Nothing could bring about the end of this monster, until one day a young girl stumbled upon the door to the Other World.

Enter Coraline. A young girl who moved into the Pink Palace Apartments and was just not happy with her life there at all. Annoying neighbors. Bad food. Unattainable clothing. Life was rough in her new home. When her inhibitions were at their lowest, a small button-eyed doll arrived at her door. How peculiar. Coraline found her way into the small door towards the Other World, and quickly fell into the old ways of the Other Mother. A guiding cat who talked to Coraline through the magic of the Other World helped her see through the lies of the malintent malnourished matriarch. While she definitely got out with a scratch or two on her body, she managed to free the three ghost children and lay waste to the Beldam and her dying grotto of a world. Although she was defeated, she never left Coraline's head as a reminder to always appreciate what she has.

Aggie Prenderghast

Ghosts. Magic. Witches. Do you believe in it all? For the residents of Blithe Hollow, they sure did. Keep in mind, this was in the era of the Salem Witch Trials. Nobody was safe from the tyranny of the court's judgement. It was a sad, unending period of time. And young Agatha Prenderghast was a simple girl who lived with her mother. Her mom would read her stories, and they lived a happy life together, until one day. One day when Aggie was found speaking, simply to nothing. At least to the naked eye. But in reality, she willed the power to speak to the dead, a power that somehow ran deep in their family line. However, to the general population of Blithe Hollow, this was unnatural and worthy of execution. Simply for being different, Aggie was hung for her connection to the undead and murdered only at age 11. As Aggie saw her horrifyingly short life flash before her eyes, she cursed Blithe Hollow 300 years from her death date for her to reek havoc upon the town. They would all feel her wrath, whether they liked it or not. Those 300 years ticked by as the residents dismissed the curse put on them, and Aggie's family line went on while her powers of seeing ghosts were passed down to a young boy.

Enter Norman. A weird child, who supposedly could see and interact with the dead, just like Aggie. Norman was in a similar boat to Aggie, as he was also made fun of in the town, hardly having any friends, but the whole "hanging people that are different" thing wasn't really acceptable in modern times, so Norman had more of a normal bad life. On one windy night, the court that sentenced Aggie was raised from the dead as angry zombies, and tormented the town who hadn't believed the curse was real. They sought the day that the witch would return, but it was simply tradition at that point. There's no way it could've been real, right?! As Norman and his friends tried to uncover the secrets of the town, Aggie made Norman see the plights she was dealt in her final moments. She lashed out at him in anger, nearly killing him in the process, but as he tried his hardest, what Aggie really needed was somebody to talk to. Norman put Aggie to rest as he read her a story, and her spirit passed onto the afterlife. Although she was gone for good, she never left the minds of the population of Blithe Hollow.

Experience & Skill

The Other Mother

The Other Mother has been tormenting kids for years, and is a master manipulator at that. She clearly uses her powers of warping reality to the best of her ability, and has immense experience with this factor. But for how long exactly? The house in the movie is stated by Charlie Jones (Coraline's dad) to be about 150 years old, and since the Pink Palace is a big part of the Other Mother's existence we can assume that she's been existing for at least that amount of time. Also the tall ghost girl in the movie is wearing clothes that look to be from the early 1800s so that supports this. Little is known about her life before the Pink Palace, if she even had one, but that's sort of what makes her scary in the first place. You fear what you don't understand and the Beldam is the embodiment of that. She absolutely is some kind of supernatural entity, perhaps a fairy due to the well to the Other World having mushrooms around it like some fairy wells do in various mythology. But that's about it. An experienced manipulator and fear-dwelling beast, but one whose specificity is relatively unknown.

Aggie Prenderghast

Aggie seems to be adept in using her magic abilities in the film, as she did put the entire town (of roughly 1,280 people) into a panic. It's unknown if she spent years planning her big curse or something, but that's likely not the case. It only happened 300 years in the making because each Prenderghast medium for generations has put her down with the book, delaying her curse by one year. Also, a big part of Aggie's character is the viewer's realization of her life being so short, and ergo, her experience would be also. Regardless, she uses her powers to the best of her ability and overall has existed for over 300 years. Perhaps overseeing humanity in one way or another.

Equipment

The Other Mother

Sewing Tools

Various items such as needles, scissors, pliers, etc. all for dismantling and cutting dolls up. And maybe people up, too.

Buttons

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and when the Other Mother sews the buttons onto one's eyes, their soul is now hers for the taking.

The Doll

The Other Mother reuses the same doll to spy on kids she wants to eat. The doll mysteriously shows up at the victim's doorstep without them noticing, and even moves on its own, too. But only when the victim isn't looking.

The Key

The key to lock and unlock the door to the Other World. The Other Mother desperately tries to steal this from Coraline to prevent her escape, and doesn't have it always, but it's here for completionist's sake.

Aggie Prenderghast

None notable.

Powers & Abilities

The Other Mother

Reality Warping

The Beldam's most iconic ability, shaping the Other World (and the real world to a lesser extent) as she sees fit. She's created things as small as cake, as complicated as a robot praying mantis, to even a moon, and stars. (Debatable)

Shapeshifting

The Other Mother can shapeshift her appearance, mostly used to look like the victim's mother. While she can (illusion-wise) remove her button eyes from view, the full extent of this power is likely limited, as she only turns into a similar humanoid figure.

Life Creation

She's been able to give life to plants, walls, and create life like the Other Wybie and Other Father. These aren't completely under her control, as they have minds of their own and oftentimes can even rise up against her. More on this ability in the Support section.

 Portal Creation

To punish Coraline, she threw her into the mirror with the three ghost children inside of it. This is likely a form of portal creation rather than intangibility as later on the Other Wybie grabs Coraline through the mirror himself. Sort of a one-way door kind of thing.

Soul Manipulation

Once the buttons have been sewn into one's eyes, their soul is now the Beldam's, and they become a ghost in return.

Technology Manipulation

The Other Father plays Coraline a sick melody by They Might Be Giants.

Flame Manipulation

Those candles sure do be burnin'.

Weather Manipulation

Can create thunder, rain, and likely other types of weather on a whim.

Plant Manipulation

Who needs water when you can grow them yourself?

Spatial Manipulation

The Other Bobinski's circus is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Color Manipulation

While black is traditional, other kinds of button eyes are available for the choosing.

Healing

The mud applied to Coraline's hand healed her poison oak scar in the morning. Probably doesn't heal writer's rash, though.

Sealing

Coraline's parents become trapped in the snow globe, this is can be ended by the sealing object being broken.

Memory Erasure

After Coraline's parents escape from the snow globe, they have no memory of what happened to them. They don't even acknowledge the snow on their bodies.

Limited Omniscience

She always knows everything that's going on in the Other World, but this hardly applies to the real world.

Limited Clairvoyance

According to Wybie, the doll he found of Coraline is older than his grandma, and maybe even the Pink Palace itself. This makes the Other Mother aware of when her targets will come to her even if its decades in the future. It's worth mentioning though that this clairvoyance doesn't give her knowledge of if she'll be defeated or not. As she would've seen it coming with Coraline and promptly planned around it.

Enhanced Senses

When the Other World & the Beldam are down to their last legs, the Other Mother can use a heightened form of her regular senses like with the vibrations in her spider web. We see a more grounded version of this in Evade the Others where the Beldam can sense your location based on sound alone no matter the distance.

Elasticity

She (or perhaps one of her creations?) grabs the Other Wybie back to the Other World.

Teleportation

Where the hell did she go

Body Control

When one of the Other Mother's hands is separated from her body, she still has control over it. It's only shown to happen with her hand.

Spider's Thread

Can dispel thread from her hand that binds the target.

Aggie Prenderghast

Mediumship

Like her descendants, Norman and his great uncle, she can see and communicate with the undead. She can likely do this as a spirit, too, but this specific ability is kind of her thing.

Necromancy

She raises the court of puritans who sentenced her from the grave, setting out to make things right.

Illusion Creation

Can make others see things that aren't truly there, when in reality they're paralyzed in place.

Incorporeality

Unlike other undead folks we see throughout ParaNorman, Aggie is different as we never see her with a true ghost form. Just ones she manipulates from beyond the grave.

Energy Projection

Translation: "Multiple arcs of white and blue energy streaked through the air, crackling and flashing like meteorites. When they hit the ground, they exploded in a burst of pale flames."
Important to note: This isn't flame manipulation, as the fire was most likely caused by the arcs of energy themselves hitting the ground.

Curse Manipulation

Right before her death, Aggie put a curse on all seven of the court who sentenced her, having them rise from the grave many years later.

Plant Manipulation

Who needs water when you can- wait I already said this

Smoke Manipulation

Creates smoke hands from the clouds, they can pass through objects but also interact with them.

Weather Manipulation

Whenever the sky is shown, thunder crackling can be heard as the clouds swirl above. This piece of art even depicts her summoning a tornado.

Mind Manipulation

Translation: "I'm dead?"
When Norman is brought into the court illusion, he immediately thinks that he's dead. It's likely this is a weaker ability of hers as he soon forgets about this.

Electricity Manipulation

Her most used ability, being her control of electricity as an element. This isn't just from the clouds, though, as her avatar form also has this. Speaking of...

Avatar Creation

We see the smoke dispel and stop at Aggie's tree as she then contains her magic into her lightning avatar form. This form can be interacted with by Norman meaning it isn't a typical ghost/spirit like we see in the film. The avatar shows the following abilities:

Flight / Levitation

She hovers above the ground for the majority of her appearance in this form. Typical ghost stuff.

Duplication

Can create illusory doubles of herself, but only the original is shown to be able to interact with others.

Telekinesis

As the breaks the terrain around her, it's lifted up into the air. This is likely telekinesis rather than a form of gravity control as Norman stays at a regular gravity level. Perhaps another form of this is shown on the 10th anniversary box art.

Pocket Reality Manipulation / BFR

As a form of battlefield removal, when someone grabs ahold of Aggie, she's able to send them into a pocket dimension of the tree where her mother used to read her stories. Even though she's put into her human form here, we see she still has access to her powers.

Support

The Other Mother

Jumping Mice

One of the Other Mother's main methods of gathering info on the real world and her victim's problems. They also go tootle-toot.

Other Bobinski

Commands the group of jumping mice, and is defeated when the ghost child's soul is removed from his body.

Other Wybie

A copy of Coraline's friend in the Pink Palace who helps her escape later on. He sadly can't speak as Coraline found it annoying.

Bat Terriers

If these dogs are disturbed by light they'll will attack anything in their way, even if they're an "Other" creature.

Other Spink & Forcible

These two have bodies that stretch like taffy, and when the Other Mother's strength wanes, they reside inside a giant piece of candy.

Other Father

The Other Father is the Other Mother's second-in-command, until he went against her, at least. He becomes a real threat when piloting the...

Mantis Tractor

This mantis can swiftly cut through plants (as shown above), break wood & stone, and even fly.

Various Insect Furniture

This group of her creations block the way back to the real world. They act more as moving furniture rather than sentient creatures.

Spiders

Surprisingly the only arachnids she makes despite her clearly spider-inspired design. They slowly chase after Coraline.

"Other" Physiology

With the Other Mother's creations with life specifically, they are all implied to be made in a similar way to the dolls. When they die, their true form is revealed and they'll let out a lot of sand. The same sand made with the doll in the beginning of the film. If they're a creation with a mind of its own, their life force specifically depends on how strong the Other Mother is at that time, like we see with the Other Wybie. The Other Father even states "Her strength is our strength." before being silenced by her.

Aggie Prenderghast

Puritan Zombies

The zombies that Aggie raised from the grave, which she has a total of seven of.

Zombie Physiology

They act like typical horror movie zombies, with their limbs being able to pop on and off with little repercussion. Their limbs always seem to find a way back to themselves, as well.

Feats

The Other Mother

Taking the Other Mother at face value in VS is a pretty complicated thing to do. Either you're on the side of "she's a star-level goddess with a ton of hax!!!" or "she's a complete cat-level fraud with a laundry list of anti feats" and the sad reality is, both sides are true to some extent. While she is a master manipulator and can create an entire world around her victim years in advance, physically speaking, she only barely keeps up with a non-magical 12-year-old girl. She doesn't even react in time when the cat is thrown at her face, which grants the loss of her sight pretty easily. When she doesn't get what she wants, she lashes out in anger as her plans are foiled by a feline and a young girl working together. Also pretty much all her reality warping powers are bound to the Other World. While it's been shown she can slightly effect things in the real world like Coraline's parents missing, that's up to interpretation as to how that even worked. If you were to put the Other Mother on complete neutral ground, she wouldn't be able to do anything notable whatsoever.

Aggie Prenderghast

Aggie's weaknesses mostly come down to her age and experience. While her body has nothing to do with how powerful she is (due to her incorporeality) she can easily be outwitted, as she uses brute force way too much. The moment she was awoken from the curse she started to victimize the people of Blithe Hollow, lashing out in fits of rage, and a clever opponent with the right abilities could easily take advantage of that.

Before the Verdict

Star Level Other Mother?

While the Other Mother very clearly created a moon, and that moon is a very core part of the Other World's power, there's various stars in the sky along with the blinding light of the button moon. But nearing the end of the film the stars are nowhere to be seen during the last act of the entire movie. While it's most easy to assume she is star level because of this, it's not consistent with the rest of her reality warping abilities which remain relatively the same until a ghost child's soul is found. So what are the stars in the first place? While a lot of this is up to interpretation it could be assumed that the stars we see in the other parts of the movie are just lights in the night sky, as likely creating multiple stars all at once would drain her of her powers very quickly. And one big moon would be a lot easier. We know from the Cat that the Other Mother only makes what impresses Coraline, so putting up a few lights as stars to save her powers a little bit longer would make sense. Since all she wants truly is to eat Coraline.

TL:DR: She very well could be calculated at star level, but is more consistently small planet level. Roughly it doesn't matter all that much for reasons I'll get into at the actual verdict.

Is Aggie's Lightning Real Lightning? (How Could Norman Survive It?)

Aggie's lightning and overall manipulation of electricity can seem a bit shaky to some and this is here to explain why. Whenever the lightning seems to hit Norman it doesn't kill him, even though he's a frail 11-year-old boy. Even when Aggie explodes the entire forest with her lightning abilities, Norman gets up just fine from the interaction and keeps talking. So is it possible that it isn't actually electricity and instead some kind of weaker magical beam that just has the properties of lightning? Well, yes and no. Because the vaporizing of the entire forest should 100% kill a normal tween kid, but Norman just rubs his arm and gets back up fine. Even Aggie seems to be surprised that he survived it. So it can't be lightning right? Well, again, while a normal kid shouldn't be able to survive that electric blast, Norman isn't a normal kid. The whole point of this interaction with Aggie and him is that they're so alike in the first place, and that's why Norman believes in himself to put an end to her curse. Norman is a supernatural being just like Aggie, so it's likely he has a superhuman intolerance to magic like this. I'd even go as far as to say he could also curse people in his last moments, as Mr. Prenderghast himself seemed pretty powerful as a poltergeist, but Norman never dies in the movie so that's neither here nor there.

So even if you don't believe Norman is getting hit by real lightning that is emanating from Aggie's avatar, there's one more thing to clarify. Her weather manipulation. Whether you like it or not, she absolutely has control over the weather throughout the movie and thunder is heard every now and again in the background. So even if the lightning that hits Norman isn't actual electric powers, Aggie could just as easily replicate that with other abilities she has.

TL:DR: Her lightning is most likely real lightning, due to her connection with controlling weather, and Norman could survive it because he's a type of human comparable to Aggie.

Verdict

Stats

Probably the most confusing part of this match, there's a lot to consider here. Starting with attack potency, the highest Aggie can be calced at is town level, against a small planet to even star level Other Mother (depending on what you believe). Regardless the Other Mother is much stronger with her reality warping abilities and there's no contest against that. So, easy dub for the Beldam, right? Well, not so much. That's just analyzing the Other Mother with her strength in the Other World, rather than her just, in general. Elaborating more on this from the Other Mother's Weaknesses section, the problem with her power is that she can easily create a moon, but other than that has the strength and endurance of a middle aged woman. She probably can't find a way to keep up with Aggie's relative strength as a spirit, who can even attack with straight up lightning, heck, even her zombies show greater raw strength when compared to the Other Mother. So at her peak, the Other Mother is MUCH stronger with her reality warping in the Other World, and assuming this battle at least starts in the Other World, Aggie can wear down the Other Mother with her attacks pretty easily. So while the Other Mother takes raw strength at first glance, she certainly doesn't show that in actual physicality. While Aggie has consistent strength throughout her powers. Strength goes to the Other Mother at the start of the battle, but Aggie takes strength overall.

Speed is a slightly different story, as Aggie doesn't have any notable movement or reactionary feats herself, besides scaling above Bub (I guess, lol) but that can't really be calculated in any way. The Other Mother however keeps up with Coraline, who in the game displays superhuman feats of speed, which the Beldam could scale to due to the fact that many of her creations can keep up with Coraline and she'd obviously scale above all of them. Although 70 mph reaction speeds can hardly keep up with the lightning Aggie can dispel, being 270,000 mph (nearly 4000 times faster!) Even if we're assuming that the Beldam, being a witch like Aggie, can handle magical blasts like Norman could (being a human connected to the supernatural also), it still clearly hurt Norman, and the Other Mother can't take that many hits before being put down for good. She was heavily effected by just a cat getting thrown at her face, so literal electric blasts getting thrown at her face also (even if she could tank them relatively well like Norman could) would eventually wear her down, which is similar to the strength discussed above. The Other Mother wouldn't be able to react to each lightning blast fired at her, pair that with Aggie's natural flight abilities, and the Beldam hardly takes speed. I suppose you could argue that the Beldam's teleportation could give her a slight edge here, helping her keep up with Aggie, but both instances where she teleports are always when Coraline is looking away. The first instance is when Coraline is trying to leave, and the other is when Coraline is sitting literally directly away from her. Two very specific situations that are very unlikely to happen in this battle. So while the Other Mother has faster calculable reaction speeds, they're not fast enough for Aggie's electric-based attacks. Speed goes to Aggie.

And finally, durability. Like I've said many times at this point, the Other Mother can hardly take a lot of hits before her weaknesses start to show. At most we see she can upscale from the Other Wybie being slammed against the wall, and she recovered pretty quickly against being kicked by Coraline. And that's about it. However, none of this really matters as Aggie can't be harmed in normal ways. Sure, the Other Mother can interact with her lightning avatar fine (if given the chance), but there's hardly a way for the Beldam to damage her and debilitate her quickly. She'd have to resort to other ways for killing her, which will elaborated on in the next section. Durability goes to Aggie.

Powers & Abilities

This is where these two really shine. They're both filled to the brim with powers and hax that could easily win the fight in multiple ways. The Other Mother specifically, when she has the homefield advantage, can do practically anything. The powers cataloged in this blog are just what we know 100% what she can do, since she can assumedly create anything she puts her mind to, as long as it actually exists in real life. So while it's pretty out of her character to just randomly create bazookas and nukes at will, the Other Mother can definitely do that, as there's nothing really contradicting her from doing so. Aggie on the other hand is much more grounded. She has a few things the Beldam doesn't, like illusions, limited mind hax, flight, creating avatars of herself, and most importantly, her incorporeality. I'd like to talk about this one in specific since it could win the fight just alone. Incorporeality is described as being a spirit with no real physical form, potentially making others see illusions and avatars around the self you want them to view. With Aggie specifically, we see that the storm above Blithe Hollow stops as the smoke creates a physical form she can communicate with Norman in. As stated before, this form can be physically interacted with, but it's unknown if it would actually harm Aggie permanently, but for the sake of this battle let's say taking down this physical form would kill her for good. How does the Other Mother get around it? And, more importantly, stop Aggie from just going back into her witch storm form above Blithe Hollow that we see in the film? Well there's a few ways to stop an incorporeal being from continuing to exist, and the two that the Other Mother has access to are her reality warping and soul manipulation.

Reality warping in specific is just all the powers the Other Mother has access to (minus soul manipulation, I'll get to that in a sec) but stopping Aggie from going back into her witch form is entirely something she can do. Let's say that Aggie and her zombies stumble upon the Other World and she starts to create the storm inside of it. The Other Mother has weather manipulation herself, which would force Aggie out of her witch form, forcing her to become physical. Essentially, the Beldam would warp reality around around the non-corporeal witch form, putting them both on equal ground. Since the Other Mother can literally shape the Other World in any way she wants, this is totally possible. Now the fight becomes the Beldam vs. the Aggie avatar, so can the Beldam destroy the remaining avatar for good? Well, yes and no. The only way to permanently kill Aggie at this point would be for the Other Mother to take her soul with the button eyes. However, this would mean Aggie would actually have to say yes to this. And this is all assuming Aggie actually has a soul to take. For the sake of the match, sure. I'll say she does since it technically was never taken. While Aggie is 100% the target audience for this kind of maneuver, she's hardly like any of the other kids that fell victim to this before. They were defenseless. Aggie isn't. With her pocket reality, she can take the Other Mother outside of the Other World, rendering her powers of reality warping moot. Aggie still has access to her powers here, while the Beldam wouldn't. Similar to attack potency, the Other Mother takes this category in the Other World, literally being able to do whatever she wants, but Aggie has the longevity of always having her powers no matter where she is. Powers and abilities go to the Other Mother at the start of the fight, but Aggie takes powers and abilities overall.

Experience & Skill

This one's pretty simple. It's a child versus an adult. More specifically, a naive kid against a smart and conniving adult. Technically, Aggie as a spirit has likely existed for longer, but she hardly shows that she's experienced beyond the 11 years she spent alive as a human. The Other Mother has taken young children like Aggie before, and is exactly the type of opponent the Beldam has experience in beating. Heck, the Other Mother could even know that Aggie's coming decades before the fight happens. Experience and skill goes to the Other Mother.

Support

This one's slightly more complicated than I expected. Aggie's zombies are shown to be durable as hell, as typical zombies are in media like this. They're able to take hits from the angry mob of Blithe Hollow that have flaming torches, pitchforks, and a lot of firearms. One even survived being hit by a car, and their limbs always know where their original body is. Altogether though, they're slow as hell. I mean, they are zombies after all. While they're all pretty durable, Aggie likely can't revive more zombies if they're killed off, since the seven that were resurrected are specifically the ones she cursed. Also there has to be a graveyard nearby for her powers to even work like this, so she clearly only has access to only seven very durable and very slow zombies. The Other Mother's support though is complex to quantify. She has the power to conjure any being she wants with button eyes. She even sees through the little mice in the movie, giving her plenty of opportunities to find out even more ways to outsmart her opponent. Creations like the Mantis Tractor in specific are pretty powerful, being able to break stone and wood with ease. This brings us to the biggest problem with her subjects though, and that's the fact that smarter creations (like the Other Father & Wybie) will rise up against her in secret and help her opponent. Her way of mitigating this is to force these creatures to attack the victims against their will, which only works to her advantage up until a certain point. The Other Father in his final moments even gives Coraline the first soul she needs. They also depend on her for strength, like everything else in the Other World, so the more hits that the Beldam takes, the worse her army would likely get.

Comparing Aggie's support to the Beldam's though is tough, as they both have the edge in certain categories. Their support can both break things pretty easily, having roughly the same attack potency, but Aggie's support is more durable overall. The Other Mother's support obviously takes speed though, as she has multiple things that can fly and keep up with Coraline on foot. The Mantis Tractor is both of these things, for example. (Damn that thing is strong) But the Other Mother will eventually lose her army as they either rise against her, or she just can't make any more because she's been weakened so much. In conclusion though, the Beldam takes this category with a few exceptions, being durability and loyalty in specific. Support goes to the Other Mother.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The Other Mother

  • Much stronger with reality warping...
  • Faster reaction speeds...
  • More versatile support options...
  • Smarter and much more intelligent
  • Would likely know about Aggie before she gets to her
  • Can negate Aggie's weather form, reducing her to just her avatar
  • Could potentially take Aggie's soul, killing her permanently
  • Apart of the writer of this blog's favorite movie
Disadvantages:
  • ...Much weaker without reality warping
  • ...Not fast enough to react to Aggie's lightning
  • ...Her creations are prone to betrayal
  • A lot less stamina, her powers would drain during the fight
  • Abilities like sealing and teleportation are situational
  • Much less durable, is basically as frail as an old woman
  • Would have a hard time getting Aggie to sew the buttons
  • Not used to opponents that can fight back, especially one as ruthless as Aggie
  • No defense against Aggie's pocket dimension, making her powerless
  • Has a very shitty Roblox game

Aggie Prenderghast

Advantages:
  • Stronger base powers...
  • More durable and loyal support...
  • Can make the Other Mother powerless in her pocket dimension
  • Always has her abilities
  • Can't be killed normally, forcing the Other Mother to play by her rules
  • Lightning blasts will always be able to hit the Other Mother
  • Harder to tag with flight and telekinesis
  • More stamina
  • One of the most tragic animated characters put to film
    Disadvantages:
    • ...Comparably weaker in the Other World
    • ...The zombies are slower, dumber, and there's only a finite amount of them
    • Much more naive, would likely fall for the Other Mother's tricks
    • Less experienced
    • Can be reduced to just her avatar form
    • Animated series never got picked up :(

    Final Thoughts

While some of the advantages the Other Mother has are pretty tailored to combat Aggie's character, it's clear that when looking at it altogether, Aggie takes it more times than not. The Other Mother could potentially score a win with her soul manipulation, but actually getting to that point is going to be hard for her. Especially if the conflict of this fight is the Other Mother tricking Aggie with a button-eyed version of her mom, only for the young girl to realize that her mom is a child-eating beast. Aggie wouldn't take kindly to that and would want to dispose of this eldritch horror rather quickly.

These two have their magic abilities, but don't pretend-erghast that a pair of normal witches would stay at the core of a line that easily. The Beldam held the key to her victory in many ways, but let's not jump to any electrocutions. At the end of the day, the Other Mother just couldn't thread the needle.

    The winner is Agatha Prenderghast.
