"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive."
-Dalai Lama
Flowey, the genocidal nightmare of the underground.
Giygas, the universal cosmic destroyer.
Everyone deserves love, right? Everyone deserves a chance at hope, the chance at happiness, the chance at... Life. Even for the worst of people, these possibilities can change them as people, perhaps effecting the world in just the right way to make a difference.
Before We Begin...
Both Flowey and Giygas will be analyzed with their original games as the primary source material, with other media included (mostly to specify certain in-universe questions) that don't stray away from any major continuity errors such as the Mother 2 manga and Undertale's alarm clock dialogue. All possible forms and versions of these two characters will be considered in the final verdict as well. Not only does it make this matchup a hell of a lot more debatable, but it's also just more fun to talk about. For clarity, here's a list of the things used/not used in this blog:
Flowey:
Used:
- Undertale
- Undertale Art Book
- Undertale 5th Anniversary Alarm Clock Winter Dialogue
Not Used:
- Deltarune
--
Giygas:
Used:
- EarthBound Beginnings (Mother)
- EarthBound (Mother 2)
- Mother 3
- Mother 1 & 2 novelizations
- Mother 2: Ness's Adventure Memoirs
Not Used:
- Mother: Invasion From the Unknown
- Mother 2 Game Book
Connections
- Both were born to a nonhuman race (monster and alien), with the root of all their future turmoil coming from unusual/unfortunate childhoods
- People from outside of these races, would be the ones to change their lives the most (Chara, the human, falling into the underground, and a married couple of Maria and George, being abducted from Earth)
- These outsiders became very close to them, even becoming family (Chara becoming Asriel’s best friend and adopted sibling, and Maria going above and beyond to raise her adopted son)
- Their fathers would go off to study a power that would eventually help the main protagonists of the respective stories, and be the downfall of both Asriel and Giegue (Human SOULs and PSI)
- One disastrous event after another, and the families would be torn apart, and the nonhuman races would launch their offensive and declare was/invasion of the human world. (George left his wife behind for Earth, to give the people of Earth the alien’s secrets of PSI, and both Chara and Asriel’s deaths would lead to Asgore and Toriel to split after Asgore revealed what he planned to do)
- Both are immensely powerful, and in their stronger forms becoming terrifying in both physical appearance and as an opponent, with most/all of their attacks being incomprehensible, and only being able to take any significant damage by pure human emotion (Determination and prayers)
- They were defeated by people who were very close to them (Ninten, being Giegue’s nephew, and Frisk being considered by Asriel as his best friend)
- Their deepest desires, beyond all the fighting, war, death, invasion, etc, is to just have a friend, their family back together again, and they are willing to put aside any other desires to get those things back
- The main protagonist refuses to listen, and to defeat them, they use something so very personal against them, that once they realize what’s going on, they can’t help but cry and plead for it to be over (Frisk uses all the previous human souls, who all want to help Asriel just as much, and Ninten and his group begin to sing a lullaby, the same lullaby that his mother used to sing to him)
Background
Flowey
The Dreemurs lived a peaceful life in the underground. Asgore, Toriel, and their son Asriel all ruled amongst monster kind like a happy family. Together they ate pies and planted flowers in harmony. Nothing at all could disrupt this bliss they all lived in, being locked underground after the war on humans. One day, a lone human from the above grounds fell into the underground. This human was called Chara. Asriel, in all his kindness, decided to bring Chara into his family, and they decide to adopt them as their own. How sweet. Although they found a new place to call home, Chara didn't exactly want to stay in the underground forever. They truly wanted to harvest a monster's soul to get vengeance on the humans in their past village. After trying to harvest the soul of their adoptive father Asgore, karma struck bad as Chara got poisoned and fell ill. As a dying wish, Chara asked Asriel to see the golden flowers from their home village one last time. With that, Chara died and their soul was absorbed by Asriel. Fulfilling his sibling's last bequest, Asriel made his way to the surface, but was killed by a mob of angry humans in the process. Asriel's body turned to dust and was spread across their parents' garden, leaving only Chara's body behind. Was this a plot from Chara all along? Or was it their true colors finally shining through in their last moments? We may never know. Asgore, struck with grief declared war on the humans once more, splitting from his wife Toriel in the process.
Years pass as humans that fall into the underground are reaped and taken for their SOULs to break the barrier of the underground. Meanwhile Asgore's royal scientist Dr. Alphys, wanting to impress him, imbues one of his golden flowers in his garden with the essence of DETERMINATION. A power that allows a soul to persist after death, that human SOULs carry naturally. These experiments fail time and time again, until one of the flowers mysteriously disappears, and Alphys brings an end to her experiments. One of the golden flowers brought to life by Alphys wakes up in Asgore's garden, with the memories and personality of the lost child Asriel. Unfortunately, this came with a cost. Asriel couldn't feel any empathy at all. His compassion disappeared as he fled from his father, not seeing a reason to live anymore. He tried to end his own life, but couldn't go through with it. Through the strength of his DETERMINATION, Asriel learns the power to reset the timeline, doing it thousands of times and trying everything his mind can think of to feel something. Killing them, befriending them, anything. Throughout these times, Asriel decides to take on a new name. Flowey, letting the years pass by with no interference. Threatened by a newcomer human with the same ability to SAVE and Reset, Flowey watches over them in their time in the underground. He remembers if they kill monsters, spare them, do a little bit of both, becoming an eldritch monstrosity every now and again. Flowey was remembered of his past as Asriel after being spared and saved by this fallen human, Frisk. While Flowey could never learn to be that past version of himself, the little love he found was enough for him to push on.

Giygas
"Perish with the rest of the ugly Earth People."Maria and George were your typical 1900s family. They met while working in the newspaper industry, having written for the same column, the Mother's Day Times. Falling in love, the two of them lived in the town of Podunk, USA, with the high-high population of 31. One morning George grew weary of black, swirling clouds forming above the hills of the nearby Mt. Itoi. Seemingly, people would come back returning with no memory of what had happened to them. George began to document his findings, but got abducted with Maria in the process. An alien race of an unknown background were kidnapping humans to help them raise their people, more specifically, an alien named Giegue. Maria took kindly to this endeavor, parenting Giegue with all her heart. She sang him eight melodies and loved him like a son. George however, found plans in the mothership that would eventually lead to the conquering of Earth. George took information from the ship and fled back to Podunk, sadly not being able to rescue Maria from the clutches of the aliens. George locked himself in a house in the middle of nowhere, dedicating his research to the psychic abilities of the alien race. Maria spent the rest of her days caring for Giegue, and seemingly passed soon after. Years went by as Giegue grew into an adult, with the order from his species to destroy Earth. During his journey the great-grandson of George and Maria, Ninten, set out with a plan to defeat Giegue and unlock the psychic powers inside himself. Not long into his adventure, Ninten found himself in the dreamlike dimension of Magicant. Its ruler, Queen Mary, asked Ninten and his friends to find the eight parts of a song she once held dear to mend her amnesia. Walking across all of America in very specific locations, finally playing the songs for Queen Mary made her remember her past. It was Maria, with Queen Mary being the physical representation of what was left of her consciousness. Its unknown how Mary got to that point, but as the songs played she faded from existence, now teaching Ninten and his friends what they must do. They trekked up Mt. Itoi and played the eight melodies to Giegue, making him remember his past just like Queen Mary. Giegue was forced to retreat from the Earth, but made a plea to one day return and strike back.
Decades later, Giegue came back to Earth with the same mission, but with different emotions. To make sure he accomplishes his goal this time, Giegue put himself inside of what he calls the Devil's Machine. Not only does it help contain his powers, but it focuses them, too. With this newfound technique he takes on the new name of Giygas. Attacking from the past, only a few living creatures managed to escape his grasp. One of which being Buzz Buzz, a time traveling fly who warned the prophesized one of Giygas's return ten years from then. A young boy from Onett, Ness, is told by Buzz Buzz to visit eight musical sanctuaries to unite his powers with the Earth and put an end to Giygas's tyranny for good. Ness journeyed throughout the land, visiting these sanctuaries with his friends, all while being stalked by Ness's next door annoying neighbor. Porky (or Pokey depending on the translation). Porky was chosen by Giygas as the sole host for his evil doings, growing inside his body like a mental xenomorph of madness, he pushed Porky to make Ness and his friends' life so much worse. Or he could just be a dick. We don't really know. Giygas, sensing his defeat, escaped to the past with Porky, eventually being followed by the four protagonists. Even with the power of a universe on his side, Ness and his friends couldn't debilitate Giygas for good. At this point, Giygas was a being so far removed from human existence that his attacks couldn't even be comprehensible anymore. There was nothing that they could do to stop him. Nothing they could do, but pray. And so they did. They prayed for their safety, and so did the people of Earth itself. Even you did. Yes, you reading this. You helped to defeat Giygas for good, putting him out of his misery. As Porky rolled off into another time, Giygas, originally Giegue, died while understanding love.
Experience & Skill
Flowey
Flowey has tons of experience in the monsters of his world, has studied them for likely years, knows everything about them, using his reset power to do so. He's even said himself that he's read every book in the underground. Every possibility you can imagine him doing, he's likely succeeded (and failed) in doing so. Resetting is a crazy ability for this, but among his already huge knowledge he's a great fighter, being able to sustain strong monsters like Papyrus and Undyne, and even keep up with the likes of Frisk. Not to mention he's a pretty good manipulator, being able to trick Papyrus into being one of the main reasons he got all the human SOULs in the first place. Overall Flowey is an extremely skilled and smart guy, only falling to those who he doesn't see coming.
Giygas
Giygas, after the events of Mother 1, became the most powerful conqueror in the universe, as we learn from Buzz Buzz. More specifically, the Universal Cosmic Destroyer. It's quite a title to behold to someone, even for Buzz Buzz who hates Giygas and wants him destroyed, is willing to admit how powerful he is. Giygas has created hundreds of alien robots with his species powers of PSI, and has technology that far surpasses Earth scientists like Dr. Andonuts and the Mr. Saturns. Not only that, but Giygas is likely the leader of his alien species, or at least one of very high importance. They wouldn't have entrusted him with destroying Earth if he wasn't extremely adept in being a reign of terror like this. This is a problem with a lot of the Mother series' lore, a lot of it is left up to speculation as it's vague in a story sense. But reading between the lines, we can see that Giygas is a clear threat to not only planets, but entire universes. He's smart enough to plan around his opponent's weaknesses, employing or corrupting Porky to make Ness and his friends have a harder time getting to him.
Forms
Flowey
Omega Flowey
After swiping the six SOULs for himself, Flowey turned into this beast of a plant. Signs on the wall of Waterfall tell of when a monster absorbs the SOUL of a human, they become a horrific being with split control between the SOUL and the monster inhibiting it. With it, Flowey becomes almost unstoppable, but ultimately his plan backfires on him when the SOULs started to help Frisk, because they still had caring minds of their own.
The God of Hyperdeath
Giygas
Sealed in the Devil's Machine
As the Apple of Enlightenment foretold, 10 years in the future Giygas would be defeated by four children. Scared, Giygas locked himself inside the Devil's Machine to contain his PSI abilities. Almost nothing can touch this thing, having a built-in forcefield that reflects attacks.
Unsealed out of the Devil's Machine
Equipment
Flowey
Six Human SOULs
These are the six souls collected by Asgore to break the barrier, but he was missing one. He never used them in combat, but Flowey does! He uses these to become Omega Flowey, and they all have their own individual abilities, too. However these come with a drawback, as they'll revolt against Flowey if given enough time.Asriel manifests these swords in the final fight. They can create tiny little stars when sliced together.
Chaos Buster / Blaster
Mothership
The ship Giygas used to imprison hundreds of Earth dwellers, and travel to the ends of the universe. It also has built-in sound nullification, for some reason.
Glass Pods
Alien Cocoon
This is how Giegue is fought in the first Mother game. Made out of his own bodily fluids, he resides in it to limit his full power.
"Ultimate Reset Button"
This machine can revert reality back to a certain state. It's unknown what this piece of technology truly looks like, but it has the power to reset actions that he's done before. In the novel it's quite literally compared to an RPG mechanic, like saving and resetting a game. (See: Before the Verdict)
Flying Saucers
Apple of Enlightenment
This is not an actual apple, but instead another piece of tech likely connected to Giygas's species in some way. It foretold his defeat at the hands of Ness, but there's some things it can't predict, and it has only been shown to see 10 years into the future.
This statue had evil influence over those who protected it, controlling them through their mind. It's so powerful that it made people as mentally strong as Ness and Jeff think they were in a completely different reality, and after it was removed from the clutches of Monotoli, it rapidly aged him years in time, or at least made him much weaker.
Mini-Mini Mani Mani
This statue was hidden in a burger stand's water supply, making anyone who drank from it greedy and gluttonous.
Inter-Dimensional Transmitter
Phase Distorter
While it was stolen by Porky, this is a time machine used by him and Giygas to reach the ends of time itself. It was crashed and broken in Cave of the Past.
Devil's Machine
The machine Giygas was going to use to focus his powers and destroy the entire universe. He can also use it to become an entire dimension, where even his mind can't comprehend what's happening, destroying his consciousness completely.Powers & Abilities
Flowey
Social Influencing
Due to resetting the timeline so many times, Flowey has an impeccable sense of how others work. He can solve others problems, manipulate them to do his bidding, or even (attempt to) get the player to never turn the game on again.
Acausality
Remembers when the timeline is reset. He's not completely acausal, though, as logic still applies to him. He's just unaffected by resets the same way most others are.
Mimicry
Can mimic the face and voice of others.
Soul Manipulation
Every attack in Undertale does damage to your SOUL, so this also applies to Flowey.Non-Physical Interaction
Same reason as above. Due to affecting the SOUL, which is inside someone, he can attack things that are non-physical.
Plant Manipulation
Being a flower connected to the Earth, he can sprout long plant-like tendrils to entangle people with, and can even summon a Venus flytrap to ensnare flies.
Friendliness Pellets
Reality Warping
Energy Projection
Can summon these X-shaped projectiles from his eyes, and also a laser.
SAVE / LOAD
Flowey can SAVE and LOAD his large array of files he has, acting as a way to control the timeline he's currently in. He gets very creative with this.
Dreemurr Flames
Star / Galacta Blazing
Shocker Breaker (I & II)
Lost Soul Attacks
Homing Projectiles
Giant Laser Blast
DETERMINATION
DETERMINATION is the most powerful ability in Undertale. Ones with this power can heal from near death, decrease incoming damage, manipulate space time, and even exist without a SOUL, just like Flowey.
Plant Physiology
(as Flowey & Omega Flowey)
Boss Monster Physiology
(as the God of Hyperdeath)
Resistances / Immunities
Empathic Manipulation
Flowey and Omega Flowey (Immune) (Can't feel love)
Soul Manipulation
Flowey (Immune) (Doesn't have a soul)
Omega Flowey (Resists) (Takes SOUL attacks as physical damage with the human SOULs he has)
God of Hyperdeath (Resists) (Takes SOUL attacks as physical damage with the monster souls he has)
Extreme Heat & Cold
All forms resist (Flowey could reside in Snowdin and Hotland just fine, other forms should compare)
Giygas
Corruption
Throughout his takeover of Earth both times, animals, people, and even inanimate objects start to bend to Giygas's corruption. It doesn't necessarily make people evil, but instead makes the evil in one's mind much more prevalent. Because of this, it doesn't relatively affect people who are good at heart.
Flight
It's likely Giygas can fly/levitate on his own, it's also possible he can just pick himself up with his own psychic powers.
Weather Manipulation
Giygas's species is capable of creating the black clouds we see over Mt. Itoi. These also make people go mad.
Acausality
He would have destroyed the entire universe from the past, thousands of years before his own birth, yet remained unaffected in the present, twisting space and deploying his army to alter history without suffering any change himself.
Spacetime Travel
Giygas has the ability to send his robots (and by extension, himself) through space and time. He even does this with a dinosaur, sending it back to its original time period.
Limited Precognition
In this conversation between Giygas and the Apple of Enlightenment, it tells him certain things about his future. Some things are impossible to predict, however.
Possession
If he so pleases, Giygas can choose to grow inside a suitable host, using their body as a sort of stasis chamber for when he's ready to emerge.
Abstract Existence / Incorporeality
After being put into the Devil's Machine, Giygas became the absolute embodiment of Evil itself, not having a true body or corporeal form.
Forcefield
Psycho Barrier
Power Bestowal
We know Giygas's species primarily used PSI, and the only way that Giygas would be able to give NPCs like his robots and minions these abilities is if he had them himself. All the following PSI-based attacks are used by those enemies in some form or another.
PK Beam
This attack with Ω deals high damage, while γ kills the target instantly (only if they're not metallic or a boss).
PSI-Block
Stops the opponent from using PSI for a few turns. Probably will fail because I swear to god this always fails every time I fucking use it and it only has like FIVE PP SO LIKE WHAT'S THE POINT OF-
PSI Magnet
Drains the PP from the target.
PSI Shield
PSI Flash
PSI Fire
Deals damage to all enemies in a row. I like spamming this one in Smash.
PSI Thunder
PSI Starstorm
Ness's Final Smash, it's literally described as showering your enemies with a multitude of shooting stars.
PSI Rockin
Shield
Brainshock
Lifeup
Hypnosis
Inexplicable Attack
An attack unable to be explained or accounted for. It's likely a type of alien attack his species used, as the human party members can't understand it. It deals high-level non-elemental damage to all members of the party.
Incomprehensible Attack
An attack of which its true form cannot be grasped. Has these effects randomly:
Alien Physiology
This puts Giygas at a higher-dimensional existence, even greater than Ness when he fused with the universe of Magicant. In this form he quite literally is his own dimension, as seen in external media like shown above, being everywhere all at once.- 60-180 points of damage to two random enemies
- 4/8 (50%) chance of crying, 1/8 (12.5%) chance of strangeness, 1/8 (12.5%) chance of paralysis, 2/8 (25%) chance of instant defeat
- 135-225 Freeze-element damage to all enemies with a 25% chance of solidifying the target
Alien Physiology
(as Giegue & inside the Devil's Machine)
Giegue's species is often referred to as insect-like, they hatch out of an egg, and seem to naturally generate PSI in some way. They also hide in an alien cocoon to contain their powers. Not much else is known, though.
Dimensional Physiology
Dimensional Physiology
(unsealed out of the Devil's Machine)
Resistances / Immunities
Ice, fire, electric, sleep, blindness
All forms immune (Unaffected by most of what the Mother 1 & 2 cast can throw at him, elementally and status-wise)Support
Flowey
None notable.

Master Belch

- His Mothership was able to travel to the ends of the universe in a matter of two years (MFTL+)
- Out of the Devil's Machine: Became his own dimension (Nigh-Omnipresent)
Scaling
Flowey
Underground Monsters
(as Flowey)
It's only natural base Flowey would scale to relatively all of the underground monsters, having fought and killed all of them in past timelines.
- Ice Wolf throws ice blocks (64,383 Joules)
- Papyrus ran across his house (16.92 m/s)
- Undyne can suplex a boulder
- Undyne is quick (Mach 3)
- Mettaton breaks through a wall
- Mettaton kick strength (0.04 Tons)
- Sans throwing bones (13.03-15.5 Kilojoules)
- Undyne can survive her house going up in flames (7 Megajoules)
- Knight Knight can summon meteors (6.4 Tons)
Frisk (and Chara?)
(as Omega Flowey & the God of Hyperdeath)
Due to facing a late-game neutral Frisk as Omega Flowey, and a late-game pacifist Frisk as the God of Hyperdeath, Flowey in both forms scales to them. While it'll be put here for convenience, Flowey in the God of Hyperdeath form could also scale to Chara. (See: Before the Verdict)
- Frisk:
- Can push large rocks
- A single human SOUL's power trumps the entirety of the underground's (7288.803 Tons)
- Can dodge the Great Dog's barks (187.35 m/s)
- Dodged the not-real lasers (Mach 0.9)
- Can react to Tsundereplane who can fly fast (Mach 3-4)
- Can stack Sea Teas to get even faster (Mach 3-6)
- Chara:
- Capable of killing both Toriel and Asgore in a single blow
- Destroyed the entirety of Undertale as a reality, and then recreated it (Multiversal) (See: Cosmology)
Giygas
Mother 1 Gang
(as Giegue)
Giegue sees the Mother 1 gang as lesser saying "You are like mere insects to me!" And due to the fact that you can barely harm him in the final fight, Giygas should comfortably scale above them.
- Ninten can walk 700m in 13 seconds (54 m/s)
- All can react and dodge Omega Borg's PK Thunder attacks
- Ana shot a beam from her mind compared to a supernova explosion
Mother 2 Gang
(Lower-end feats: All forms, Higher-end feats: sealed & unsealed)
As Giygas's attacks can't be comprehended by them, and he (in general) couldn't be defeated by them either by normal means, he should obviously scale to the Mother 2 gang.
- Ness, Paula, and Jeff can carry a submarine
- Paula and Poo can freeze a Chomposauraus (25.6 Kilotons of TNT)
- When losing control of his powers, Ness can just casually blow up the fucking sun (Star level)
- Ness, with Teleport, can move across continents in seconds (Mach 3820)
- Ness dodged electricity (Subsonic)
- Poo can perceive every living organism from all of time at once (18 million c)
- All of them can tank a nuclear explosion to the face
- Ness, Paula, and Jeff shake off the Skyrunner explosion (1.1 Tons)
- Ness fused with all of Magicant, which is stated to be a completely different dimension
Mother 3 Gang
(in all forms)
While Giygas isn't technically in Mother 3, the Mother 3 party should be comparable to the other two groups.
- Lucas dodged a train...
- ...And then got hit by that train (0.005 Tons)
- All of them can dodge rays of light from the K9000 (Relativistic)
- Kumatora, with the help of Salsa, destroyed a tank
- Most should be comparable to Flint, who tanks a tree exploding (113,591 Joules)
Cosmology
Flowey
The Size of Undertale's Multiverse
The main person responsible for the resets of timelines is Flowey, so we can analyze what he's said to get a feel of how many timelines there truly are in Undertale's canon. We know that Flowey has reset hundreds upon hundreds of times, doing truly everything that the underground has to offer. It's to the point where people started to look like NPCs, and he then he started to get bored, his powers transferring onto Frisk. There's not much to say about how many times Flowey needed to reset except saying that's a extremely high number. The manipulation of there being a multiple amount of timelines is supported by Sans stating "timelines jumping left and right, stopping and starting." Confirming that there are indeed multiple timelines and not just one or two. From Omega Flowey's fight, we know that the game can hold up to at least 6 timelines. However, there's more. Let's talk about Gaster. A scientist who fell into his creation and was shattered across space time. Depending on your fun value in the game, you can encounter a consistent presence of Gaster throughout them, and no encounters can be seen in the same fun value. So, these events have to happen across a larger time space continuum. With all of this in mind it basically confirms that the power of Chara and Asriel are comparable to each other, being able to affect a spacetime construct of at least 12 timelines. There's a very good chance it could be a lot bigger as well, but this is the highest it can be calculated without getting into some large speculation. Since, we have no idea how many times Flowey truly could have reset. The timelines he was able to reset go up until at most the thousands. So, great, that clears up at least how powerful the God of Hyperdeath's power could be, right? Well...
The Possibility of Infinite Timelines
Most like to point to this statement by the Clam Girl, who claims there are an infinite amount of opportunities in the world of Undertale, and there's a few more arguments for there being an infinite amount of timelines. Clam Girl's statement is further explored by Chara stating "Let's erase this pointless world and move on to the next." Before destroying the world of Undertale, then rebuilding it. Again, saying specifically "the world" is infinite and therefore, the timelines are too. The bottom line is, there are consistent arguments for both timeline arguments that can be considered.
Giygas
The Size of Mother's Multiverse
In the manga, it's stated by Jeff, the smartest of the party members that infinite parallel worlds exist unto themselves. Timelines with each decisions are constantly being born and brought into existence, and they exist parallel to one another. This is a very deliberate statement, clearly telling the audience that there exists an expanding amount of infinite universes.
Dark Dragon
This fucking guy. Okay let's get into it. Sleeping under the Nowhere Islands in Mother 3, which when unsealed at the end of the game is awakened and does... Something. We don't exactly know what, but it causes some kind of destruction or apocalypse that ends the entire world. Maybe. Again, it's left up to speculation what actually happens at the end of the game, but it's worth talking about here. Some argue that by the dragon awakening, it can end the entire Mother multiverse and therefore be perhaps scaled to Giygas, since he can do similar things like affect the time axis of it. Within Mother 3 as a whole, the Dark Dragon is likely about to destroy just Mother 3’s universe. There are quite literally 0 implications about the dragon destroying the multiverse. It's also possible that Mother 3's events could be happening in the Mother 1 and 2 universe instead of being separate one, which makes it more so not a matter of where Mother 3 is happening but more a matter of when. But there's not a very concrete answer for that. Like the end of the game, it's left up to interpretation. Overall it's unclear if the Dark Dragon is capable of the same kind of multiverse-effecting powers like Giygas. If the dragon is, it acts as more evidence that Giygas truly is Multiversal+, but at most, the dragon is still universal.Weaknesses
Flowey
Flowey suffers from a significant problem of longevity. Ironic, given his time manipulation, but it's sort of where his biggest flaws come from. Whenever a Reset occurs, his LV drops to 0, and has to gain his relative strength back. He relies on outside sources like the SOULs to gain the advantage, but they often backfire in his face like with the SOULs helping Frisk. Or with the God of Hyperdeath, being able to now feel love (and thus remorse) to any opponent he's facing. The right foe could easily manipulate that weakpoint of his, leading to his ultimate downfall. Flowey's experience is also an issue. Sure, he is very smart socially, but it's only limited to the underground, as the barrier prevents him from moving outside of it. What he knows it only what the underground could know. If someone with, say, more varied fighting experience than Flowey came along, and was notably faster, they could easily pose a threat to the little fella.
Giygas
Giygas, even being the indomitable foe that he is, is weak to one thing we all know and love. Love! Compassion is truly what breaks Giygas. Whether it be Maria's song or literal prays from human beings across Earth, people coming together really brings this guy down. While that is applicable to Giygas in all forms, when he becomes unsealed out of the Devil's Machine his mind breaks, not being able to comprehend his madness. If Giygas faced someone with the same dimensionality and with their mind in-tact, that could possibly be debilitating for Giygas. Weirdly enough though, Giygas outside of the Devil's Machine seems to be weak to the move Brainshock. It's a move that makes the opponent feel strange and attack themselves or another opponent, working more and more the higher an opponent's IQ is, and Giygas's should theoretically be 0 if his mind is broken, right? But that's up to interpretation, I suppose. Though theoretically if someone with enough competent mind hax came along, they could effect Giygas and do some real damage.
Before the Verdict
So... Giygas can SAVE / LOAD too?
Short answer, yes. Analyzing the text, before the Reset Button is even talked about, Ana and Ninten get into an argument about wishing how they could reload different points in time like an RPG. And later we learn from EVE that Giegue literally has that ability. Narratively, it works as a point to the reader to show how powerful Giegue truly is. He isn't bound by human consequences, furthering the lack of humanity the novel wants the reader to believe about Giegue, which is what makes the final moment of him remembering Maria so much more emotional. This is done a few other times throughout the novel, but the point of the argument between Ana and Ninten is that consequences matter, and we are who we are because of them. It's a sweet moment, but in a VS sense it quite literally means he can retry the battle at any point he wants. It's described literally as "A machine that can revert the entire world to a state like before one was even born." Meaning it could reset the entire universe to a point where the world didn't exist. As a sort of time machine. This is consistent in the manga with Giygas's ability to send dinosaurs and other animals back and forth in between time. It's not crazy to consider that Giygas can do this normally.
Flowey Scaling to Chara
(in Hyperdeath form)
Asriel can be said to scale to Chara in some aspects, specifically regarding the control and use of save/load functions within the game. However, the extent and nature of the scaling are debated. Both are capable of the same things, like erasing timelines, worlds, etc., so it should be easy to bring Asriel up to Chara's level in terms of being able to erase the multiverse. The only reason that Asriel didn't in the final fight was presumably because both Frisk and Asriel had rivaling DETERMINATION and Asriel ultimately got overpowered. It's only natural that in the Hyperdeath form Flowey would scale to Chara. I mean Chara was quite literally absorbed by Asirel in their final moments, implying a similar level of power even at a young age, so it'll be allowed.
Art Tributes!
Verdict
Stats
Let's start with strength. In Flowey's base, the peak for strength he can reach is scaling to Knight Knight summoning meteors, which caps out at around Large Building levels of strength. In Giygas's base, he could shatter a comet about to hit the planet. Since it was in the novel, there's no way to calculate it, but Maria says "It's going to hit the Pacific Ocean, isn't it?" Meaning she was implying it would hit the ocean, then wipe out life on Earth. Scientist Jeff Magnum once compared such an event to a land mass collision, putting Giygas's base powers in likely the Continent levels of power. Although even before his transformation with the machine, he's described as being able to destroy the universe. (Or, the unverse, lol.) So even considering the comet feat we're likely severely low-balling him. So, clearly, Giygas takes strength in base. But let's consider their peak strength in other forms.Giygas out of the Devil's Machine created a shockwave that affected the entire time axis and threw it into chaos, which exists over infinite timelines. And similarly, the God of Hyperdeath could match the powers of Chara, who could erase the entire world of Undertale and rebuild it. Both Mother and Undertale's verses have shown to contain multiple timelines, and whether the fact that Undertale has specifically infinite timelines is questionable, but it's all down to how you interpret it. There's really conflicting evidence for both sides of the timelines argument, but let's just say that there are infinite timelines in Undertale's lore for the sake of the debate. Then, Asriel would pretty easily take strength. Being able to erase an infinite multiverse is a lot more powerful then just being able to negatively effect an infinite multiverse overall. Without Undertale's infinite multiverse argument, Asriel doesn't measure up to Giygas's true stength. It's likely he wouldn't be able to comprehend it, also. To play it safe: Strength in base goes to Giygas, and strength at their peaks is a tie.
Moving on to durability, we'll analyze it the same way. In base, then at peak. Flowey again scales to his base strength at Large Building level, being able to tank hits from Knight Knight. Giygas doesn't have any direct feats of durability as his alien self, mostly due to the fact that Ninten & the rest can't even get close to harming him fully. Although Giygas definitely upscales from the Skyrunner explosion, putting him at around regular Building level, but that's not calculably higher than Flowey. So while Giygas could scale higher, Flowey takes durability in base.
Flowey at his peak doesn't have much in terms of feats for durability, but during the God of Hyperdeath fight, we clearly see his DEF being infinite. Given that Asriel is already an infinitely more powerful being than Omega Flowey, whose LV was 9999, he can be put in the Multiversal+ ranges of durability. Comparing this to Giygas, out of the Devil's Machine, he could tank hits from the likes of Ness who fused his powers with the universe of Magicant. Scaling Giygas to Ness here, he reaches Universal levels of durability pretty naturally. It's very possible that Giygas upscales this, as even when Ness and his friends lowered Giygas's defense to the lowest it could be, he was still nowhere near being defeated. But, it's vague and we can't really fully grasp his durability at this level. Beyond that, though, the only way that Asriel was able to be defeated was by Frisk using ACT, and using SAVE to finally overpower him. Because of this it's unlikely that Asriel could even be harmed via conventional means from Giygas's final form. While both of them are likely similar in durability, Flowey can negate Giygas's just by attacking his SOUL, which is another reason I think Flowey takes this category. Flowey takes durability on both ends.
Finally with the stat trinity is speed. Flowey's highest speeds in base are scaling to the likes of Undyne, calculated at around Mach 3. This would also work for reaction speed, too. However there's just no measuring up to the speeds of Giygas's mothership, which could be brought from the ends of the universe to Earth in a matter of two years, reaching MFTL+ speeds. While we don't know how big Mother's universe is, it wouldn't even be possible by normal means to travel our entire universe in two years at light speeds. However, without his ship, he's still faster than base Flowey by scaling to the Mother 3 party who were able to dodge beams of light, putting Giygas at Relativistic at least. Giygas takes speed in base.
Speed at their peaks is a bit of a doozy. In the Hyperdeath form, Asriel was capable of keeping up with Frisk in the pacifist route, who could move and react to Asriel's Hyper Goner attack. Frisk is running through space-time in order to escape the destruction of it, which is pretty clearly Immeasurable. Giygas, when unsealed outside of the Devil's Machine, becomes his own dimension. This is pretty clearly deliberate, as Porky being the one who put Giygas into the machine would know the most about it, and likely wouldn't exaggerate in a scenario like this. Giygas, as an entity, becoming the entirety of a dimension, would mean he's everywhere inside of it no matter where you go, making him Nigh-Omnipresent. Since Asriel would have no way to take the location elsewhere, despite being able to move anywhere in the dimension, he would never be able to get the jump on Giygas and outspeed him. Giygas takes speed on both ends.

Equipment
Most of Flowey's equipment, besides the human SOULs, are pretty much just things that he creates on the spot. Sure they look cool, especially the Chaos Slicers, but they don't actually do much to play into his actual strength or abilities. Even the six human SOULs that turn him Omega revolt against him if the fight goes on for too long, so his one piece of equipment in his arsenal that really boosts his versatility is basically worthless after a while. Giygas on the other hand has a lot of things going for him in the item department. For starters, the Apple of Enlightenment gives knowledge on those who try to defeat him, and could theoretically know about Flowey ten years ahead of when they first meet. This can be debated, though, as the Apple of Enlightenment is unreliable at times as well. The Evil Mani Mani, though, is truly something that Flowey would have trouble working around. Due to the fact that it feeds upon the evil in one's mind, the statue would have a field day with the types of illusions it would create for Flowey, who is pure evil and doesn't have a soul to love with. Since Ness and Jeff thought they were in a completely different dimension when in contact with the Evil Mani Mani, it would give Giygas the opening he'd need to attack Flowey. The last notable thing I'd like to mention with Giygas's arsenal is the Ultimate Reset Button. Specifically:
Is the Ultimate Reset Button greater than Flowey's SAVE / LOAD mechanic?
Assuming that Giygas only has the ability to hold one load point at a time, since he never uses this ability in canon, then no, it isn't greater. Not only has Flowey shown to load multiple saves at once, but he uses it in a way that can kill Frisk multiple times over. Again, Giegue never actually uses this ability so it's very easy to say Flowey has greater control over timelines just, in general. Also we need to remember, the Ultimate Reset Button is specifically referred to as a "machine" or a "device." Meaning, it isn't biological like Flowey's, and can therefore be broken. Everything works in favor of Flowey here, but it's important to remember that if Giygas has his own saving and loading technology then he can likely remember when certain points are loaded and remember things from them, even if he didn't load them himself. This could only be debated in his Giegue form though, as his two other forms are shown to exist outside of time and space, therefore are acausal beings, and aren't effected by time manipulation like saving and loading. In conclusion, Flowey has greater control of loading points in time, but it can't be used to get much of an upper hand in the long run.
Giygas takes equipment.
Powers & Abilities
This is really where this matchup starts to get tricky. The only ability that the two share is acausality, which is befitting of two threats to the concept of time itself. Things like Giygas's forcefield wouldn't work against Flowey, as attacks in Undertale directly target the soul, negating conventional durability. This would've been hard to get around otherwise, as Giygas's shield quite literally reflects anything shot at it. Also, it's unlikely Giygas's corruption would work against any form of Flowey. But all for difference reasons, funnily enough. Flowey resists empathic manipulation since he doesn't have a SOUL to feel things with (which is different from the Evil Mani Mani, who specifically tricks others into using it and makes illusions based off of their mind) Omega Flowey's human SOULs might not actually turn against him if they're corrupted by Giygas, since they would now not feel the need to help others. Asriel also wouldn't be affected because he's someone who's good at heart, and therefore doesn't have evil in his soul to manipulate. I just think it's kind of hilarious that Giygas's main ability of getting the edge over others wouldn't affect any version of Flowey, even Asriel. Speaking of Asriel, his Hyper Goner attack is his most powerful ability (canonically speaking), being able to erase an entire timeline. Giygas wouldn't be effected by this because he exists outside of space and time, and his dimension is likely a place where things like that don't apply. Even if a timeline he's in is erased, he could just move to another one of which we know there are an infinite amount of. We know that Giygas wouldn't be effected by SAVE / LOAD (as discussed in equipment) so that's a moot point as well. Also, it's unlikely that Flowey would be able to counter his incorporeality completely. Erasing concepts and ideas is surely a thing that no version of Flowey can do, even if you can erase infinite upon infinite amounts of timelines, the only way that Giygas was defeated permanently was by millions of people praying for their safety against him. After he's out of the Devil's Machine, he becomes the concept of what it means to be evil, and it makes sense that the only thing that stops evil for good is people literally hoping for your defeat. Asriel is one guy, and doesn't have control of the thousands of SOULs trapped within his body to wish Giygas away for good. This isn't even mentioning the completely overwhelming versatility Giygas would have in his PSI abilities. Abilities to heal, mess with someone's mind, channel the elements, make you and your friends stronger, the list goes on. That would definitely give base Flowey a run for his petals. Flowey's powers and abilities may be cool as hell, but not enough of them are able to counter what Giygas brings to the table.
Giygas takes powers and abilities.
Experience & Skill
This one's difficult to quantify. Flowey, before Frisk came around, had been resetting the timeline for years. He quite literally got bored of an entire world of possibilities and just let time move on. Throughout that time he fought and killed everyone, befriended them, read every book, read every line of dialogue from them, and started seeing the world one dimensionally. As NPCs in a game. While Giygas on the other hand is an incredibly intelligent and important member of his species. He's created robots and technology that far surpasses anything humans are capable of. He's sent planets across the universe to their knees and likely has fighting experience because of that, while Flowey's skill and experience is limited to the underground. So, ez dub for Giygas right? Well, there's one more thing. Like for the entire blog we've heavily been looking at different forms, and when Giygas is out of the Devil's Machine, his mind breaks. He literally cannot think or perceive anything that's happening to him, being unable to process any action or thought on his own. It's the only way that he could've been able to combat Ness. But that being said, Flowey in his other forms would automatically be smarter.Giygas takes experience and skill in the beginning,
and Flowey takes it near the end of the fight.
Support
So, support obviously goes to Giygas here due to Flowey not having any, but I'd like to note down the advantages Giygas's army gives him, and how Flowey can match it in some ways, at least near the start. Giygas's enemies that can cause ailments like night-time stuffiness and diamondization likely wouldn't affect Flowey due to his plant physiology. Moves like Shield could be negated with Flowey's SOUL manipulation, and this non-physical interaction allows him to attack Belch's ghosts as well, with their cold abilities not affecting Flowey either because of his cold resistance from staying in Snowdin. Same with his heat resistance. Minions with PSI Fire would do little damage against someone with really big heat sustaining powers. PK Beam γ could result in the end of Flowey early on, but if he summons the six SOULs to turn himself into his Omega form, he can negate insta-kill moves like that very easily. Although with how much teleporting and freezing support options Giygas has, it's likely he can kill Flowey with his army before he even has time to react. Although non-metallic members of his forces could possibly get absorbed by Flowey, also. Like he did with turning into his Hyperdeath form, when overwhelmed by a certain amount of opponents, he could easily absorb them and turn into Asriel. That is if aliens even have SOULs to be absorbed. There's a lot to consider here, but in general Giygas has a lot of options with his army in this fight.
Advantages and Disadvantages

- Worse time manipulation
- "C'mon, Reggie give us Mother 3!"
Final Thoughts
Going into this I for sure thought Flowey was going to stomp. Originally I wanted to do this for how under researched Giygas was and well... He sure was under researched. Especially with things like the novel and manga, too, I had no idea about the infinite timeline stuff with EarthBound, or the god damn Ultimate Reset Button. Both of them in their final forms essentially can't be fully defeated, as Asriel was brought down by Frisk's love, and Giygas was brought down by humanity's love, so neither can really win with just power alone. Overall there's definitely a few ways Flowey can succeed, but Giygas pulls through more often then not, and even has ways to end the battle at the very beginning.
While some were surely rooting for him, Flowey was alienated from his own victory by the mother of all that isn't holy. As the last petal fell, Flowey got planted... Six feet under every reality.
The winner is Giygas.
Oh and one more thing...
Before I get to the next time, I wanted to talk about some other matchups I like for Flowey and why they're cool. While Giygas is awesome and definitely my preferred in a backstory-sense, there are a few others that are great, too. As a Death Battle fan you get to a certain point where you just really love a character and want to see them on no matter what person they fight.
Flowey VS The Princess (Slay the Princess)
The most likely for Flowey since the cast, and I'm happy it is. Slay the Princess isn't exactly the type of media you'd expect to see on DB and the Princess kinda works perfectly around Flowey's SAVE and LOAD mechanics, if you consider the different endings in StP as actually different timelines, that is. It would make for such a unique and emotional fight that I really love the potential behind. I played StP rather recently and I fell in love with this matchup kinda on the spot. Very nice. I almost even considered this to be the blog for this time but I just wanted to talk about Giygas lol
Flowey VS Bill Cipher (Gravity Falls)
This matchup at first seems like some DB Fanon Wiki slop, but after looking into it it's actually pretty cool and a decent alt for both. They share a pretty similar story, of being genocidal maniacs who abandoned their previous homes, and are trapped in a certain place, wanting to break the barrier and turn into much more powerful forms. Bill making a deal with Frisk and then falling down into Mt. Ebott to fight Flowey just seems like such a cool setup, but I'm pretty sure Flowey gets stomped here, sadly. The rap battle is fire tho.
Flowey VS Dimentio (Super Paper Mario)
This used to be my preferred for Flowey, and it's still a very good matchup in my eyes. These are two are conniving RPG villains, revealed as the true antagonist the whole time, who want to bring about the end of the world via colored heart-shaped objects. I think Dimentio may have been an inspiration to Flowey (given SPM's similarities to Undertale) which is why this works so well. Dimentio is a really great and frankly underrated Mario villain I'd love to see on the series at some point, in one form or another. This matchup used to be relatively popular a few years back, I even knew about it before I was really in the DB community, like that's how popular it was. Kinda sad to see it lose steam the past few years, but oh well.
Flowey VS Snatcher (A Hat in Time)
Discovered this one rather recently, so I think it needs some more time to grow on me fully but this one totally works as a matchup. Both call the main character an idiot/fool, both steal their abilities, jealous of others who can manipulate time, wanting to do it for themselves. They were even both princes in their past lives. Basically this matchup could be them playing off meta aspects of one another and insulting each other at the same time and I kinda love that. Also it's the only one where Flowey stomps instead of his opponent so that's cool.

I disagree with the Human Souls rebelling against Flowey here for two reasons. One: That only happened during the Omega Flowey boss. Two: That also happened when Flowey was going to kill a helpless child AFTER Frisk called them for help. Against someone who’s PURE EVIL, that isn’t going to happen as the souls would choose to help the lesser of two evils, which is Flowey. Outside of that, agreed with result, although for a different reason. Giygas’s existence might make it impossible for Flowey to target him, while Giygas’s incomprehensible attacks would likely be able to affect Flowey, which would lead to Giygas’s victory in a war of attrition.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading :) and your reasoning makes sense here, I didn't consider the calling for help aspect. But overall it wouldn't change the outcome lol
Deletedisagree with the outcome but cool blog (love to see more respect for the UNDERTALE cast)
ReplyDeleteThanks! and it's all good like I said in the blog flowey def wins a few times here and there
DeleteGreat blog. Happy to see that Giygas getting the respect he deserves.
